Member resources: 'SSES explainer' and 'How we deliver SSES - what it takes to build products'

18 Jun 2026

Following BEAMA’s Westminster reception, From Policy to Product: How SSES is Shaping Manufacturing, Flexibility and the Consumer Experience, we are making available two new member resources exploring what Smart and Secure Electricity Systems (SSES) means for manufacturers and wider industry.

The event brought together BEAMA ETS and SBG members, Government (DESNZ and OPSS) and industry partners to discuss the next phase of SSES and what successful implementation looks like in practice.

BEAMA has been closely engaged throughout the development of SSES, working with DESNZ, OPSS and wider stakeholders to help ensure implementation reflects product reality while supporting the ambition of a smarter, more flexible and secure energy system.

As the representative body bringing together Energy Smart Appliance (ESA) manufacturers across heating, EV charging, battery storage, heat products, controls, and wider connected technologies, BEAMA is playing an important role in bringing different product perspectives together under one industry voice. This becomes increasingly important as technologies become more connected and consumer outcomes depend on products working together across the home and wider energy system.

A strong message emerged across the evening: support for the ambition behind SSES remains high, but attention is increasingly turning towards implementation, delivery pathways and market readiness.

To support members, we are sharing two publications developed through BEAMA’s engagement across SSES:

  • SSES Explainer
    • A short overview of the Smart and Secure Electricity Systems programme, including the policy context, expected market impacts and how SSES is intended to support flexibility, interoperability, consumer outcomes and future energy system delivery.
  • How we deliver SSES - what it takes to build products
    • A practical companion piece exploring what implementation means for manufacturers, including product development cycles, delivery considerations and the realities of preparing products for market readiness.

These publications reflect themes raised through member engagement and discussions across Government and industry, including:

  • Product and implementation timelines
  • Interoperability and market readiness
  • Consumer confidence and value
  • Delivery pathways and investment certainty
  • Practical considerations for scaling smart energy technologies
