BEAMA influences BEIS Select Committee report on semiconductor supply

28 Nov 2022

The BEIS Select Committee, a cross-party group of MPs that scrutinises BEIS’s work, has published its final report following its inquiry into semiconductor supply chains. BEAMA submitted a response to the inquiry and our evidence was specifically mentioned in the Committee’s report. The Committee picked up on evidence supplied by members that the price of some components had risen considerably, and that shortages were making it more difficult to comply with some regulations.

The Committee found that:

  • UK should work with US and European and other democratic nations on semiconductor availability
  • BEIS takes the lead within UK Government on semiconductor availability issues
  • Government has said it is working on a Semiconductor Strategy but this needs to be published without further delay
  • UK is missing out on inward investment
  • UK should set up a semiconductor sector deal to help consider how to best use public funds and support options

You can find the full report here. The Government will publish a response to the report in the coming weeks.

BEAMA has taken action around supply chain issues by launching an Electricity Products Supply Chain Council. Working with many other organisations representing key parts of the energy system, and with strong interest from Government, we will be publishing some insights in 2023 and setting out what industry and Government can do to encourage investment by resolving supply chain issues.
