Smart meters have become a key enabler of the UK's energy transition, helping consumers better understand their energy use while supporting a smarter, more flexible electricity system.

 

The latest edition of BEAMA's Market Pulse report explores the current state of the rollout and the policy developments shaping its future. One trend is becoming increasingly clear: the focus is shifting from installation volumes towards the long term performance of the smart metering system. 

For many years, policy discussions centred on deployment targets. Today, government attention is increasingly focused on achieving near-universal coverage by 2030 while ensuring meters continue to operate effectively and deliver value to consumers and the wider energy system. 

This shift reflects the growing importance of smart meters in supporting the UK's wider energy ambitions. As homes adopt technologies such as electric vehicles, heat pumps and battery storage, smart meters provide the foundation for smart tariffs, energy flexibility and greater visibility of energy consumption. 

Alongside continued rollout activity, there is increasing emphasis on connectivity and system resilience. Industry is preparing for the future retirement of 2G and 3G mobile networks through the deployment of 4G communications hubs, while ongoing work through the Smart Energy Code continues to strengthen the performance of the smart metering ecosystem.

Through recent consultations, including work on enhancing the smart meter installation journey, we have highlighted the importance of practical improvements such as better coordination with low carbon technology installations, addressing installer capacity challenges and delivering a consistent customer experience. 

As smart metering enters its next phase, success will be measured not only by the number of installations but by how effectively the system supports consumers and enables the transition to a cleaner, more flexible energy future.
